We are happy to announce that the Mark 2 Testnet is now live! This marks the beginning of the Testnet Expansion Phase that will ultimately lead to the launch of Chromia’s mainnet.
Initially, the testnet will consist of a small group of provider nodes arranged in a single cluster. Keep an eye out for ‘Provider Spotlights’ coming soon, which will tell you a little more about these early partners. We are currently working on service agreements with additional providers, who will be onboarded and announced over the coming weeks. We are also in contact with dozens of additional candidates, some of which will be added as the testnet progresses.
To begin with we are primarily testing the dapp deployment process, which will require developers to stake ERC-20/BEP-20 Chromia tokens in order to request application hosting. The staking page has been updated to facilitate this ‘stake-to-deploy’ system. Stakers will also notice that the interface has been given some UI improvements.
2022 saw progress on several necessary components for a fully featured platform that can power a diverse ecosystem of next-gen decentralized applications. Some of these components are complete, while others (such as the FT4 token standard) are still under development. Throughout 2023, the testnet will be gradually built out as more functions and features are integrated. This development stage will take several months and result in a testnet that is a 1:1 representation of mainnet.
In addition, there are other tasks to be completed. The process for adding providers must be perfected, and several more beyond the initial group must be onboarded in order to reach a sufficient level of decentralization. Delegated staking also needs to be rolled out, replacing the current passive staking system. Tasks like these will be worked on in parallel as part of the preparations for launch.
As of this announcement, we are opening a brand new Discord server called “Chromia Lounge” to the public. This server will become a hub for Chromia users, devs, network providers, and dapp builders from across the ecosystem to connect and interact with each other.
As part of testing, we are also establishing a process that allows developers and users to report problems encountered while interacting with the Testnet. This will run via BitBucket and can be accessed here.
Starting in January 2023, we began publishing monthly ‘Developer Experience Team’ updates (targeted towards blockchain developers) in addition to our retail-focused monthly updates. Our retail updates have seen a change in format and will now begin documenting the Testnet Expansion Phase, which revolves around four fundamental goals: Feature Integration, Provider Network Expansion, Ecosystem Growth, and Raising Awareness.
As part of an organized marketing strategy, we will be waiting until the testnet is 100% ready before announcing an official mainnet launch date. The gap between this announcement and mainnet launch will be several weeks at minimum in order to establish an official countdown and carry out a focused marketing campaign. Rest assured, once the launch date is set, you (and everyone else in the crypto world) will know about it!
We thank the community for their patience, and we look forward to making 2023 a year of continuous progress that leads to the successful launch of the Chromia Network.
