We are excited to announce the successful deployment of Filehub, our decentralized storage solution, to Chromia’s mainnet. Filehub provides a new way to securely store and access digital files, and it’s available now at filehub.chromia.com.
What is Filehub?
Filehub is designed to offer a decentralized, scalable file storage solution, leveraging Chromia’s blockchain infrastructure. It provides a reliable method for storing, indexing, and retrieving files and metadata, with a focus on horizontal scalability. This allows users to store files in a distributed, immutable format that can scale with growing demand. By operating on a decentralized network, Filehub ensures that files are stored securely and are resistant to censorship or tampering.
What Does it Cost?
Storage on Filehub is paid for using Chromia’s native token, CHR. For reference, the initial cost is $0.10 USD per megabyte. However, this is just the starting point. As we deploy dedicated storage hardware on Chromia’s mainnet, we aim to significantly reduce storage costs. Payment for file storage is made upfront, and each file is stored with the guarantee of 30+ years of secure retention.
What is Filehub Designed For?
While Filehub could be used for general storage needs, it’s primarily designed for specific use cases where decentralization, permanence, transparency, and immutability are paramount. Whether it’s NFTs and digital collectibles, legal documents, or other sensitive information, Filehub is ideal when long-term reliability and protection against unauthorized modifications are critical.
How Does It Work?
Filehub operates through two key components:
Filehub Blockchain: Tracks file information and manages data references.
Filechain Blockchains: Stores actual file data in a decentralized manner across multiple nodes and validates payments via cryptographic proofs.
This structure can be likened to a body, where Filehub is the brain, and Filechains are the muscles carrying the files.
Data Permanence and Transparency
One of the greatest advantages of Filehub is its focus on data permanence. Files stored on the platform remain available and unchanged over time, which is crucial for records that require long-term integrity. Furthermore, data stored via Filehub is transparent and immutable, ensuring that it cannot be altered or hidden without detection.
Current and Future Use Cases
Filehub has already been used to store images and metadata for Fanzeal’s VfB Stuttgart digital collectibles marketplace. Now that the service is live on mainnet, we anticipate that both existing and future projects will find innovative ways to integrate it into their platforms. Stay tuned for a future post, where we’ll explore how Filehub can be utilized by Chromia-native projects, Web3 initiatives from other blockchains, and even Web2 businesses and enterprises.
About Chromia
Chromia is a Layer-1 relational blockchain platform that uses a modular framework to empower users and developers with dedicated dapp chains, customizable fee structures, and enhanced digital assets. By fundamentally changing how information is structured on the blockchain, Chromia provides natively queryable data indexed in real-time, challenging the status quo to deliver innovations that will streamline the end-user experience and facilitate new Web3 business models.
