VectorDB Extension Update: LangChain Integration and Next Steps

VectorDB Extension Update: LangChain Integration and Next Steps

As part of the Mimir upgrade in Q1 2025, Chromia released the Vector Database Extension. This tool allows developers to store and query vector embeddings directly on-chain, opening new possibilities for decentralized applications that rely on AI functionality, semantic search, and advanced data processing.

AI tools and assistants are becoming part of everyday life, and all of them depend on vector databases under the hood. That’s why we believe this Extension is a core building block for Chromia’s future.

What Is a Vector Database?

A vector database stores “embeddings,” numerical representations of data that capture meaning and relationships. These embeddings are what power recommendation engines, chatbots, image recognition, and countless other AI-driven systems.

Most of today’s vector databases live in centralized cloud infrastructure. That works for convenience, but it comes at the cost of transparency and accountability. Chromia can offer something more, verifiability and trust through blockchain, which we believe will become increasingly important as the influence of AI continues to grow.

LangChain Integration

Our latest development connects Chromia’s VectorDB Extension with LangChain, one of the most widely used frameworks for building AI agents and applications. The integration is publicly available here:

With this package, AI developers can now select Chromia as their vector database provider and gain the benefits of decentralization, transparency, and verifiability. It’s another step in putting our technology into the hands of more builders.

A Growing Market

The vector database market is already valued at approximately $2.7 billion and is projected to surpass $6 billion by 2029, driven by rapid AI adoption. By moving strategically, we believe Chromia can secure a foothold in this expanding market.

Our advantages are blockchain transparency and a strong architectural edge over other blockchains. The opportunity is clear, but success depends on lowering barriers to entry and adoption.

The Blockchain X Factor: Verifiability, Transparency

Performance and pricing are important, but blockchain’s defining strength is the ability to make data verifiable and transparent. As AI increasingly shapes important decisions, the need for trust and accountability becomes critical. Chromia doesn’t just let developers store and query vector data, it can also make this data verifiable and transparent.

Built-In Advantage: Relational Blockchain

Chromia, a relational blockchain, is the only Layer-1 that functions natively as a relational database. This makes managing and querying complex data more efficient and enables us to support vector functionality directly on-chain.

Other blockchains can try to bolt on databases and vector storage, but this requires reinventing their foundations or adding complex, compromise-heavy layers. Chromia was built with a suitable foundation from the start, giving us both a head start and a lasting technological edge.

Challenge: Make It Easy

Today, the VectorDB Extension is technically capable, but onboarding requires quite a bit of setup — learning Rell, activating an account on-chain, leasing a container, etc. Mainstream adoption demands simplicity. To succeed, this process needs to be as straightforward as logging into an intuitive interface, clicking a few buttons, and being ready to go.

Next Steps

That’s the direction we’re heading. Our focus is on abstracting away complexity and delivering a plug-and-play product for AI developers who need transparent and verifiable data.

The existing VectorDB Extension is the foundation. What comes next is building a product on top of it that anyone, from a lone developer to an enterprise, can use with ease. Stay tuned for more on this initiative in the coming weeks.

About Chromia

Chromia is a Layer-1 relational blockchain platform that uses a modular framework to empower users and developers with dedicated dapp chains, customizable fee structures, and enhanced digital assets. By fundamentally changing how information is structured on the blockchain, Chromia provides natively queryable data indexed in real-time, challenging the status quo to deliver innovations that will streamline the end-user experience and facilitate new Web3 business models.
